Barbados’ golden girl of athletics, Sada Williams, has been described as “a gem who has made her nation proud.”

Deputy Prime Minister, the Honourable, Santia Bradshaw, lauded the World Athletics Championship double bronze medalist as a “global citizen with Barbadian roots".

She made the comments at the Grantley Adams International Airport as the government unveiled two portraits of Sada inside the arrivals as well as a large billboard outside the arrivals hall with Williams decked in national colours. Sada was also presented with a cheque for 150 thousand dollars from government in recognition of her outstanding achievements.

The Deputy Prime Minister alluded to the support Sada receives from Barbadians whenever she competes in races. “We have followed you with pride and every step you take along the various tracks and especially at the World Athletics Championships. On each occasion you have flown the Barbados flag high, signalling to the world that we remain a small, but talented nation,” she said.

Minister Bradshaw told Sada that she has set a standard to be emulated by our youth, while she noted that her performances have given credence to the adage that “hard work and dedication redounds to success”.

She added: “Sada is an invaluable example to emulate, not only for our athletes but for Barbadians in any area that they choose to pursue”.

Bradshaw urged Sada to remain focused, as she sets her sights on the Summer Olympics 2024 in Paris. She said “Barbadians at home and abroad will be with you on your journey and we are wishing you the best of success and look forward to celebrating your accomplishments in Paris".
